      <image:title>Graduate Students - Michelle Busch, PhD Candidate</image:title>
<image:caption>Michelle joined the lab in Fall 2017 and is a PhD student in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology program at OU. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 2014. As an undergraduate she worked in the Cardinale Lab to find algal communities that could best be converted to biofuels. Once she graduated, she took time off to work with a non-profit in Uganda and then worked as a lab technician at the University of Houston. Projects she worked on while at UH focused on plant-soil-feedback interactions in the Crawford Lab. At OU, her dissertation research focuses on how anthropogenic effects impact macroinvertebrate communities, hydrology, trophic level interactions, and food webs. She has also been leading research projects with the Dry Rivers RCN.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Graduate Students - Megan Malish, PhD Candidate</image:title>
<image:caption>Megan is a PhD student in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies (DGES) at the University of Oklahoma, and is advised by Dr. Tom Neeson. Megan received her BA in Biology from Kalamazoo College and her MS in Biology from Central Michigan University. She is broadly interested in understanding the structure and function of stream ecosystems. Her dissertation research at OU is focusing on the spatial modeling component of the StreamCLIMES project, which aims to understand how large scale variation in stream drying affects ecosystems.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Graduate Students - Steve Bittner, PhD Student</image:title>
<image:caption>Steve joined the Allen Lab as a PhD student in June 2017. After growing up with a fondness for critters living in the salt marshes and oceans of Long Island, New York, he ventured up to the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he received his B.S. in Environmental Science and developed an affinity for freshwater environments. During his undergraduate, he studied the influence of anadromous river herring (a migratory fish) on zooplankton communities and ecosystem processes in freshwater lakes. Steve is broadly interested in what structures freshwater communities and ecosystems at multiple geographic scales, and how these patterns respond to anthropogenic and climatic changes (i.e. changes in temperature and/or streamflow regimes). He is also interested in metacommunity ecology and hopes to study food web dynamics and energy flow in a metacommunity framework.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Graduate Students - Alice Belksis, MS student</image:title>
<image:caption>Alice joined the lab in 2021, and is a master’s student in the Wildlife and Fisheries Science program in the Department of Ecosystem Management at Penn State. She graduated with a BS in Environmental Science from Stockton University, where she was a member of the Stoler lab. Her previous research focused on how climate change and anthropogenic pollutants, such as microplastics and pesticides, affect freshwater organisms. She is broadly interested in aquatic ecology and genetics, and is excited to learn more about stream communities. In the Allen Lab, her thesis research will focus on DNA metabarcoding of benthic macroinvertebrates in intermittent streams under the AIMS project.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Graduate Students - Kierstyn Higgins, PhD student</image:title>
<image:caption>Kierstyn joined the lab in 2022 as a PhD student in the Intercollege Graduate Degree Program in Ecology at Penn State. She received her BS in Environmental Science from The State University of New York at Plattsburgh and her MS in Environmental Biology from Hood College. As a master's student, her research focused on the recent invasion of the rusty crayfish in the Monocacy River and its potential impacts on benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages. She is interested in the changes that the biological health of streams will endure in the age of climate change. Her research at Penn State will concentrate on the effects of drying on benthic macroinvertebrate community structure in streams across the southern US under the StreamCLIMES project.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Graduate Students - Darin Kopp, PhD Student</image:title>
<image:caption>Darin joined the Allen Lab in summer 2015 and is now a PhD student in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology program at OU. He received his BS in biology and environmental science from DePaul University, in Chicago, and an MS in Wildlife Science from New Mexico State University. He has diverse interests that generally intersect community and ecosystem ecology and emphasize spatial patterns and processes. In this vein, his dissertation work focuses on aquatic-terrestrial linkages and understanding the role of reciprocal material exchanges (e.g. movement of organisms, detritus or nutrients across ecosystem boundaries) in structuring foodwebs. <image:title>Postdoctoral Researchers - Daniel Nelson, PhD</image:title>
<image:caption>Daniel joined the lab in January 2017 as a postdoctoral researcher. Daniel received his BS from the University of Delaware and his MS in Fishery Resources from the University of Idaho. He recently completed his PhD at the University of Alabama where his research focused on the effects of climate warming on stream invertebrate community structure and function. Generally, he is interested in using observational and experimental approaches to answer both basic and applied questions related to how climate change will alter material and energy transfer through aquatic ecosystems. His research in the lab will examine the relative contributions of autochthonous vs. allochthonous energy sources fueling stream invertebrate food webs across a broad biome/climate gradient using stable isotopes.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Postdoctoral Researchers - Dr. Stephen Cook</image:title>
<image:caption>Stephen joined the lab in June 2020 as a postdoctoral researcher. He completed his PhD at Baylor University, where he explored how anthropogenic nutrient enrichment alters the temporal assembly and spatial distribution of benthic algal and macroinvertebrate assemblages. He is broadly interested in natural controls on community dynamics, and how human alteration of the environment changes natural communities and processes. In the Allen lab, he is working on the StreamCLIMES and AIMS projects, and is particularly interested in the environmental controls (such as drying) on temporal beta diversity patterns.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Postdoctoral Researchers - Dr. Veronica Saenz</image:title>
<image:caption>Veronica joined the lab in November 2021 as a research technologist. She completed her PhD in 2021 at University of Pittsburgh, where she worked with amphibians and the effects of climate change on host susceptibility to the chytrid fungus. For her masters, at Tulane University, she worked with changes in pathogenicity of the chytrid fungus comparing the chytrid from 15 years ago to the current one. She is broadly interested in the impacts of climate change on the biodiversity of streams and ponds. In the Allen lab, she will be working on DNA extraction and PCR for the StreamCLIMES and AIMS projects, and conducuting field work in streams in Oklahoma and Kansas, and the Stone Valley Forest in Pennsylvania. She is also interested in studying changes in the biodiversity of salamanders with chytrid in drying streams compared to permanent water bodies.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Postdoctoral Researchers - Dr. Sean Wineland</image:title>
<image:caption>Sean joined the lab in Spring 2022 as a postdoctoral researcher. He completed his PhD at the University of Oklahoma, where he studied how large-scale freshwater conservation initiatives like environmental flows require solutions that involve both people and nature. As a Master’s student at Marshall University, Sean used environmental DNA (eDNA) to study the ecology and decline of eastern hellbender salamanders. He is broadly interested in how both people and nature influence the ecology and conservation of freshwater ecosystems. At PSU, Sean is researching how DNA metabarcoding performs at detecting changes in macroinvertebrate communities compared to traditional morphological identification techniques as part of the StreamCLIMES project.</image:caption>
